High carbon steel is often called tool steel, with carbon content ranging from 0.6% to 1.7%. The advantages are: high hardness and good wear resistance can be obtained after heat treatment; moderate hardness in annealed state and good machinability; raw materials are readily available and production costs are low. The disadvantages are: poor thermal hardness, when the working temperature of the tool is greater than 200 degrees Celsius, its hardness and wear resistance drop sharply; the hardenability is low.
Low carbon steel is carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. Because of its low strength, low hardness and softness, it is also called mild steel. Including most ordinary carbon structural steel and some high-quality carbon structural steel, the annealed structure of carbon steel is ferrite and a small amount of pearlite, which has low strength and hardness, good plasticity and toughness, and good weldability.
